Backloading explained: when it works and when it doesn't
Backloading can save you 30 to 60 percent on a long-distance move. Here's when it makes sense and when it doesn't, from a removalist who runs the routes.
Backloading is the secret that everyone heading interstate on a budget should know about. It's also misunderstood. Here's what it actually is, when it saves money, and when it costs you in other ways.
What backloading actually is
A truck running from A to B is empty on the way back from B to A. That return run still costs us fuel, driver, depot time. So we sell the empty space cheap. That's backloading.
Your stuff goes into the unused space, separated and labelled, and rides home with the truck. Same crew handles it pickup to drop-off. It's not 'shared with strangers' the way some operators do it. Your goods are loaded together, in their own section, with the same care as a dedicated job.
When it saves serious money
When you're flexible. Backload routes happen on whatever day the original job was booked. If you can move within a 2 to 4 week window, we can usually find a fit and save you 30 to 60 percent.
When you're moving a smaller load. Single bedroom, studio, a few rooms of furniture. Backloading is most efficient when your stuff fits in the unused space without us needing to leave anything behind.
When the route is one we run regularly. Northern Rivers to Brisbane and back, Northern Rivers to Sydney, Northern Rivers to the Gold Coast. Less common destinations work too but the date window stretches.
When it doesn't
When you have a hard date. Settlement on the 15th, keys on the 16th, you need delivery on the 17th. Backloading can flex by a week either way. If you can't, book a dedicated truck.
When the load is big. A 3 or 4-bedroom home is usually a full truck. The 'unused space' on a backload run isn't enough. You're better off paying for dedicated and running it on your timing.
When fragile or specialty items dominate. Pianos, art, antiques. We can absolutely backload them with the right packing, but a dedicated truck is gentler because the rest of the load is your stuff, packed by people who know what's in there.
How we run a backload
Same trucks. Same crew. Your goods are loaded with quality blankets and straps, separated from any other items in the truck, and labelled. Nothing thrown in.
We give you a date window at quote, narrow it as the run firms up, and confirm 48 hours out with a pickup time.
Insurance is identical to a dedicated move. Fully covered pickup to drop-off.
